Each issue of Esopus (2003–2018) was anchored by six long-form contemporary artists’ projects by both established and emerging artists. Issues also typically included personal reflections on creativity by practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, as well as portfolios of work by undiscovered artists. Along with a sampling of short plays, visual essays, film excerpts, interviews, poetry, and fiction by never-before-published authors, Esopus regularly featured installments of several series: “Modern Artifacts,” for which undiscovered treasures from the Museum of Modern Art Archives were reproduced in facsimile; “Guarded Opinions,” which featured museum guards’ commentaries on the art they oversee; and “Public Access,” which showcased items from the research collections of the New York Public Library. Each issue concluded with a themed audio compliation, for which musicians were invited to contribute a new song based on a particular subject.
